"All the fighting that's fit to post!"
Hey guys what's up it's ya boy Punchy78 here with a FIGHTSHACK RETRO interview! We've got the new world record holder on Mr. Moopy's Magic Maze here, Percy Sinlcair, and we'll be talking all about his scorechasing antics, the official fan hack ROM he's promoting, and rumors of a Mr. Moopy anime. Let's get right to it!
"Tell us a little about yourself."
Hallo! Name's Percy. I'm a retro gaming afficinado. I'm originally from the U.K. and immigrated over here several years ago, before I started seriously chasing that Mr. Moopy score. My dad's British and my mom's Aussie so my accent slips around a lot, but trust me, my heart lies in jolly old England.
I'm on the board of the Stella Sinclair Foundation, raising money for children's hospitals and cardiac research. I'm also a regular at a certain up-and-coming arcade you've no doubt heard of after that whole Deco Nami debacle went down.
"How did you get started with Mr. Moopy?"
Wish I could say I grew up loving arcade games, but my introduction to them was through my little sister. She adored Mr. Moopy with all her heart. So, I decided to carry that torch and work on beating the high score. Took longer than I'd anticipated, with setbacks along the way, including my personal health... but with the support of all of my friends, I achieved my dream. Now, I'm aiming to do use that little fifteen minutes of fame to do the most with my remaining years.
"You recently announced 'Miss Stella's Magic Maze,' an officially sanctioned fan ROM hack. Tell us more about it."
This one's an oddity, to be sure. My friend Naomi -- she runs Fairchild Funworks, an inclusive online community for arcade repair enthusiasts -- one day I showed up to my favorite arcade to find Mr. Moopy had been replaced by a young girl who bore a pixelated resemblance to my sister. It was touching, to be honest. She posted ROM images on her website, but these were quickly taken down by the rights holder, the Matsushita Collective. You know, the ones behind Pengy?
"But now they're authorized by Matushita?"
Bit of at trade, you see. They're in pre-production on a Mr. Moopy anime, some young adult fantasy silliness about guilds and wizards and such, and wanted to have a character named "Miss Stella." Well, when they hit Naomi's website with a DMCA, I lawyered up and countersued for their use of my sister's name and likeness. Fortunately my star was on the rise thanks to putting Mr. Moopy back into the public spotlight with my world record run, and Matushita weren't interested in the negative blowback online, so we came to a deal -- they'd RESPECTFULLY use Stella's name and likeness, we could keep distributing Miss Stella's Magic Maze, and on top of all that they'd donate to the Stella Sinclair Foundation's cardiac illness treatment research. In the end, everybody wins. Rather rare under modern day capitalism, but that's 20XX for you. I've a bloke named Gavin to thank for having the connections needed to make that miracle happen.
"So that means the rumors about the Mr. Moopy anime are true?"
Probably not how they wanted it to be announced, but if they wanted it to stay a secret, bloody well shouldn't have gone after my friends. Yes, it's true. Can't say as I know much about it, presumably they're expanding the world of Mr. Moopy beyond just one little blobby wad of brown pixels wandering an endless maze, but it's a thing that's going to exist soon in one for or another.
"Sounds like you've had an interesting couple of years."
It's uncanny, the speed at which life seems to move lately. But I'm intending to enjoy that ride for as long as I can. And anything I can do with my tiny amount of fame to raise awareness for a good cause? Worth it, love. Absolutely worth it.
